History of the Labradoodle

The Labradoodle, as the name implies, is a cross between the Labrador Retriever and the Standard Poodle. An Australian by the name of Wally Cochran started this intentional cross breed in the 1970's.

A blind woman in Hawaii needed a guide dog that wouldn't aggravate her husband's allergies. Cochran suggested that Royal Guide Dogs try crossing one of their Labrador Retrievers with a Standard Poodle. The first mating between the two breeds was successful in producing three low allergy pups.

Another Australian, Don Evans, also cross bred Labradors and Poodles to use as hunting dogs. Many of the Australian Labradors came from his breeding program.

In an effort to protect the Labradoodle's future, the Labradoodle Association of Australia (LAA) was begun in the 1990's, but did not continue due to lack of interest. It was revived again in 2002. The first Association for the Labradoodle outside Australia was ALANA (The Australian Labradoodle Association of North America) which was formed in 2003, with NADA (The North American Doodle Association) being formed in early 2004. The International Labradoodle Association (ILA) was incorporated in Hawaii in January 2004.
